The Starlight Express

Overview
This is the friendliest and most affordable link between the East Coast's two greatest places, Charlottesville VA and New York City. Our modern motorcoaches safely carry passengers in comfort with tickets ranging from $59.95 to $89.95 each way.

Mission
The Starlight Express is part of a family-owned and family-operated company headquartered a few miles north of Charlottesville. We strive to provide clean, comfortable motorcoaches with attention to customer service. The Starlight Express has built a reputation for reasonable prices, dependable on-time departures, convenient curbside pick-up and drop-off locations, free onboard snacks and refreshments, and-- most importantly-- a safe travel experience.

What to expect
We load up right on the street during the 20 minutes before departure, and we leave on time. We do stop for no more than 20 minutes at the Delaware Welcome Center so you can go inside to buy a hot meal and use the restroom. Just as you must remember to promptly arrive for your initial departure, you must promptly return-- or risk getting left behind.

History
The Starlight Express is was launched by two Charlottesville visionaries, Oliver Kuttner and David New. Kuttner is the race car driver and property developer who won a worldwide contest to build the car of the future. New is the entrepreneur who created the iconic Root 66 root beer. In 2004, they decided that Charlottesvillians and New Yorkers needed a clean and comfortable way to visit each other. In 2010, they sold the Starlight, but former owner New still hails the convenience of the service— as well as the local ownership. "When you purchase passage on Starlight, you're creating what I call friendly dollars," says New. "Friendly dollars stick around the community and come back and see us again."

What's so great about the Starlight Express

DIRECT. We go where you want to go. Between Charlottesville and New York City there are no other city stops, no detours, and no connections, so you keep the same seat all the way.

QUICK. Our loading and drop-off points are right on the street-- so convenient that you can take public transportation. And if you want to be dropped off by a friend, we're so centrally located that you don't even have to ask "pretty please?" Our scheduled journey is about the same as an Amtrak train: around six and a half hours. And when you consider the hassles of security checkpoints, flight delays, and that traffic-choked taxi ride into Manhattan, we're almost as fast as many flights.

SLICK. This is not your grandfather's Greyhound, so you don't have to sacrifice comfort and convenience. Our coaches are sleek, quiet, and spacious.

SAFE. Safety is paramount. Unlike some of those Chinatown buses you've heard about, our operation is fully licensed and proudly run by a Central Virginia family with decades of trust and experience in transportation. Our drivers may be friendly, but they are extremely serious about your safety.

AFFORDABLE. Did we mention price? One of our tickets is actually less than the fuel and tolls for your car. For around the cost of a taxi ride from LaGuardia airport to midtown Manhattan, we take you all the way: $59.95-89.95.

FLEXIBLE. Plans change, so we offer an extremely flexible booking/refund policy. It lets you lock in a seat at a good rate and then cancel, without penalty, anytime up to two hours prior to your travel.

CONNECTED. People living in big cities know they can ride services like BoltBus and Megabus; but people in Virginia towns want access to New York too. We're within an hour of Staunton, Waynesboro, Harrisonburg, Augusta, Fishersville, Farmville, Lexington, Crozet, Buena Vista, and Lynchburg.
